Headline News for TGFA Members

From the Front Burner –  We received a phone call from one of our members this past week about the Office of the Texas State Chemist’s intention to collect information on tests conducted on crop insurance/aflatoxin claims .  According to the OTSC, the issue the agency is trying to resolves is this:  an elevator tests for aflatoxin, crop insurance tests for aflatoxin, and the OTSC pulls a sample and runs a test for aflatoxin.  The results are almost always different.  If the State Chemist takes a sample, it bases its action on its sample.  However, the OTSC has accepted FGIS results, even if the OTSC’s results are different.  The OTSC is proposing the same for crop insurance if official procedures in are followed.  The OTSC intends to evaluate the sample collection and testing during this harvest to test the reliability of the proposal before implementation. Incidentally, it was observed that the crop insurance results for the recent Dorchester Grain bankruptcy case were very indicative of the actual aflatoxin concentration found in the bins.  The agency stated it is validating the evidence in order to insure the proposed strategy is helpful.  TGFA will be following the issue closely.
